According to legend, during the American Revolution, brigadier general Hugh Mercer was mortally wounded and took shelter against the trunk of the Mercer Oak, refusing to leave his troops as they fought on the battlefield. In 2000, at 300 years old, the original Mercer Oak was felled by strong winds. A sapling from the original tree was planted and grows in this spot today on the Princeton Battlefield, displaying resilience and strength.
